I've been a big fan of Abita beer since 1987 and visited the brew pub often when I lived in Baton Rouge. They used to have great food and an excellent selection of beers that you could only get on site. However, on July 8 I had a very unpleasant experience similar to the incident from last October described below.
My family stopped at the brew pub to fill five growlers with Purple Haze (great on tap, but sucks in the bottle) on our way to Pensacola Beach. Three of the growlers were Abita and two were Blue Star brewing (San Antonio). The bartender, while moderately busy, was not friendly, quick (even by LA standards) or attentive. After taking 20 minutes to fill the three Abita growlers, she announced that she couldn't fill the ones from Blue Star. I appealed to the manager and he also refused to fill them, suggesting I buy two more Abita growlers at $5 each. Given that the brew pub charges $9.75 to fill a growler, I politely declined. And knowing that the Chimes bar on Highland Road in Baton Rouge will fill any growler with Purple Haze for $8, I won't be stopping at Abita Brew Pub for food or beer ever again.

This place is not good, the service sucks, food is overpriced and I'm reporting this horrible est. to the Better Business Bureau and possibly "6 on your side"--the manager has NO managing skills and this site is so biased b/c my last negative review has been deleted..hmmmmmmmm...think twice before wasting your time and money here--leave beer making to Miller Lite, Corona, Bud Light,XX,

No brewing is done at this site. If you look at the brewing equipment you will see it is not used. This was the orginal Abita brewery that moved years ago. The staff claims that they have no direct connection to the actual Abita Brewing Co., which is now in Covington, LA. They do carry the Abita beers and collectibles. Maybe this should be listed as a beer bar now?

I haven't been there in quite some time but I loved most of their beers. Purple Haze is in my list of top five beers of all time. Try this place out.

I like some of the Abita beers, although I'm positive Turbo Dog is popular only b/c of the cool name. Purple Haze is great on tap, but terrible in a bottle (fresh berries vs. syrup). THe food is fine if unspectacular. Some of the select seasonals are good. I wish they'd find it in their hearts to put one hoppy beer in a bottle (Am I asking too much for one out of six of the bottles to have a few hops?). Great setting for the brewpub in very charming Abita Springs. Great little day afternoon trip from N.O.

I have a pretty fond place for Abita Brewery in my heart. I hosted my wedding party dinner here (I'm from St Louis, mind you) the night before our wedding at the Abita Quail Farm. They really went out of their way to make a special occasion...well, special. Additionally, our wedding was on a Sunday, and they stayed open a couple of hours after normal to host the "after wedding party" party. For this, they rule. Outside of this, this is still one of my favorite places. Great food, great beers, great location. Give the pecan crusted catfish a try. TurboDog is tops. And the Purple Haze is delicious.

I found their "Turbodog" at the Dinosaur Barbeque in Syracuse, NY. With a name like "Turbodog" I HAD to try it. I found it to be an excellent tasting beer. I routinely buy cases available in Rochester at a specialty beer store. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Abita Springs at a beer tasting festival a year or two ago which was held a the NYS Fairgrounds. I still wear my Turbodog T-shirt, with pride. I was at the Abita Brew pub yesterday with some friends and had the strangest experience when I asked to get several growlers filled with their Amber and Purple Haze. Both growlers are from two different microbreweries. One is from the Acadien Brewing Company that is no longer in business. The bartender initially refused to fill these containers because they were not Abita Brewing Company growlers! What difference does it make? I have had growlers filled at microbreweries and brew pubs all over the country and this has never been an issue. In Washington state I have even had Mason jars filled with beer and ale. If I purchased a growler at every microbrewery that I have ever visited my pantry shelves would be filled with dozens of glass bottles. I asked to speak to the general manager who ultimately relented and filled my "outlaw" growlers. I have been a regular customer of Abita Brewing Company for eight years, but I'm afraid this incident will make be reluctant to return to the brew pub or purchase Abita beer.

The restaurant itself is cozy, and the food and service was good. But, the beer tasted nothing like beer. If you like wine, you may like this beer. Granted, it's unique, but I hate wine. If I order a microbrew, I want beer, not wine! The cool atmosphere was a tease to the crappy beer.

This is one of my favorite brew pubs! The atmosphere outside under the huge Live Oak tree is just perfect. I'd go out of my way to visit quaint little Abita Springs, LA. You can actually ride right up to it on the Tammany Trace bike trail. Beers are tasty, food selection is ok, but could use some improvement. Turbodog is one of my all time favorites, and you can't beat a fresh Purple Haze.

A great little brewpub, but the beer could improve. I will cut them a little slack as this area of the country isn't really known for brewing craft beers. This beer would have truly impressed me 5-7 years ago, but with all of the new breweries pushing the envelope on their recipes, Abita needs to kick things up a bit.

I visited this Brewpub on 12/20/03. Available on tap were Bitter, Kristal, Pilsner, Fall Fest, XXXMas, Amber, Golden, Turbodog, Light, Purple Haze & Andy Gator. I found that the beers lacked carbonation and aroma although they were drinkable. You have to order multiple sampler rounds to sample all the beers and the Andy Gator is not available to sample. You have to purchase the half pint to sample it. The kids grilled chicken meal makes an excellent appetizer.

I've been to this "brewpub" several times. The beer is brewed off premises at the nearby brewery and not on-site.
There were about 8 beers on the board-unfortunately the cask was off. I did try:
English bitter: served WAY too cold which pretty much killed off the taste.
Turbo Dog: old standby. This is better than the bottled Dog and a pleasant drink.
Andy Gator: Served in a wine glass this wasn't as potent or as flavorful as I remember from times past. Served too cold.
Food: Stuffed seafood eggplant. Delicious.
I always go back here when in the area-just don't expect an "A" style brewpub but it's great for this area.

The Abita Brewpub is located in the tiny, quaint, woodsy town of Abita Springs. The walls are covered with attractive, appropriately-themed murals. It is also right on the Tammany Trace bicycle trail; perfect for thirsty cyclists. The pub serves all the usual Abita Beers, including my favorites: Turbodog, Purple Haze, and AndyGator. In addition, they served a new specialty beer: English Special Bitter, very enjoyable. There was a Spiced Belgian, quite dark and not particularly spicey. They also had a cask-conditioned dopplebock, whose photo I am submitting. One usually thinks of British ales being cask conditioned, not dopplebocks. But, this is America, a free country, where the brewers can experiment to their hearts' desire. I'm glad the brewer tried this one, I came back for another pint the next day. The pub food was good. Being Louisiana, a thunderstorm knocked out the electricity for a couple of minutes while I was there; but, the staff recovered with aplomb. A fair selection of glasses, t-shirts, and caps are available as souvenirs. This brewpub is really a stop not to be missed if you are anywhere near the area.

Abita brewpub is the first stop we make when we get to leave boring indiana!!! The food is great and the beers are excellent....we also stop in on the way home. Abita's beers have more character and differences than the brews at crescent city brewhouse.
